Stonemason Vineyards Team

Maxime "Max" Gautier

Our vineyard management team is spearheaded by our dynamic lead viticulturist, who hails from the scenic coastline of Brittany, France. Unlike many in the industry, his initial path was not rooted in viticulture but in the sphere of business. However, a life-changing trip to New Zealand in 2014 sparked a shift in career trajectory.

He pursued academic qualifications in Angers, located in the heart of the Loire Valley, and gained practical insights during an internship at a small winery. The experience of working hands-on in organic vineyard farming proved to be invaluable. His journey then led him to the prestigious Rhone Valley in Hermitage AOC, and subsequently to two enriching years in the Barossa Valley. During this period, he honed his skills by working in the vineyard during winters and in the cellar during harvest seasons.

An unexpected twist in his journey occurred in early 2020. It saw him pruning a vineyard in Kent, England, and later moving to Provence for spring work and harvest at the esteemed Chateau d’Esclan. Eventually, he returned to the Loire Valley, taking up a position as Cellar Master at Caves de la Loire.

Throughout his journey, he has been an ardent student, continually enriching his knowledge of viticulture and learning from experienced vignerons. Today, Sonoma Valley is his new home, a place he considers an incredible locale for grape cultivation. In Sonoma Valley, Gautier brings a unique passion and perspective to Sonoma County through Stonemason Vineyards with his diverse background and international experience.
